Bindusagar Lake
Mythological Origin: Legend holds that Lord Shiva created the lake by striking the earth with his trident to quench the thirst of Goddess Parvati, and then poured water from all the holy rivers and oceans (Bindu means drop, Sagar means ocean) into it, making its water supremely sacred. Cultural Hub: It is the largest water body in Bhubaneswar and is considered a holy tank. All major rituals of the Lingaraj Temple, especially the Chandan Yatra, are intrinsically linked to this lake. Historical Context: The lake's masonry embankments and surrounding temples date it back to at least the 7th or 8th Century CE, preceding many of the major temples that now surround it, showcasing its importance as a foundational sacred site.
