Lingaraja Temple
The Lingaraja Temple is the largest and most sacred active shrine in Bhubaneswar, often considered the ultimate pinnacle of the Kalinga style of architecture. Dedicated to Harihara, a composite form of Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara), it signifies the unity of the two major Hindu sects. The main tower is an imposing 55 meters (180 ft) tall, dominating the cityscape. Built primarily in the 11th century by the Somavamsi King Jajati Keshari, the massive temple complex is enclosed within a huge laterite wall and contains over 150 smaller shrines. The presiding deity is a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivalinga revered as both Shiva and Vishnu. Note: Only Hindus are allowed inside the complex.

It is built axially with four components: Vimana (Sanctum), Jagamohana (Assembly Hall), Nata Mandira (Festival Hall), and Bhoga-Mandapa (Hall of Offerings), each progressively taller. The stone used is primarily Khondalite. Its walls are extensively and intricately carved with deities, human figures, and mythological scenes. -
