Suraj Kund

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India
Suraj Kund is a historic large water tank situated within the legendary Gwalior Fort. According to local folklore, the fort itself owes its existence to this pond. It is said that in the 8th century, the local king Suraj Sen was suffering from leprosy and was cured after drinking the holy water of this tank, as advised by the sage Gwalipa. In gratitude, the king built the fort and named the city Gwalior after the saint. The kund is a massive rectangular structure that has served as a primary water source for the fort's inhabitants for centuries. Surrounded by stone walls and steps (ghats), it reflects the ancient engineering of water conservation in hilly terrains. The water in the tank is believed to remain fresh due to natural underground springs. Historically, it was a site for sun worship, hence the name "Suraj" (Sun). Today, it stands as a serene spot where tourists can sit and reflect on the deep history of the region. The reflection of the fort walls in the still water of the kund provides a mesmerizing sight, especially during sunrise. It is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and remains one of the most significant spiritual and historical markers within the fort premises. The atmosphere around the kund is notably cooler and more tranquil than the rest of the fort.

Ancient Reservoir Engineering: The Suraj Kund is an excavated rock-cut tank measuring approximately 150 feet in length and 120 feet in width. The depth varies but is significant enough to hold water throughout the summer. It features stone steps leading down to the water on all four sides, a classic feature of Indian "baolis" or stepwells. The surrounding walls are made of local sandstone blocks, expertly fitted without modern mortar.
