History Of Durbar Hall

Royal History: The Durbar Hall is the most spectacular room within the Jai Vilas Palace, the ancestral home of the Scindia royal family of Gwalior. It was commissioned by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia (1835-1886) and was the formal court where the Maharaja held meetings, audiences, and state functions with his ministers and dignitaries. The palace itself was largely completed in 1874. Architectural Styles: The hall showcases an opulent blend of European architectural styles, primarily Neoclassical, Baroque, and Rococo, designed by French architect Sir Michael Filose. The sheer scale and lavish decoration were intended to impress visitors and demonstrate the wealth and power of the Scindia dynasty. National Significance: This hall holds a special place in modern Indian history, as it was here, on May 28, 1948, that the inauguration ceremony for the union of Madhya Bharat took place, with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru present, and Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia appointed as the Rajapramukh.
