Things To Do

The Nagore Dargah is a world-renowned 16th-century Islamic shrine dedicated to the Sufi saint Syed Shahul Hamid. It serves as a profound symbol of religious unity, attracting millions of pilgrims from diverse faiths including Hindus and Christians. The saint is believed to have performed numerous miracles, including curing the physical ailment of King Achutappa Nayak of Thanjavur. This historic site offers a tranquil atmosphere where devotees seek solace and divine blessings. The complex spans over 5 acres and is steeped in legends of healing and spiritual awakening. It is often referred to as the "Andavar" (Ruler) of the coastal region. The vibration of the prayers here is said to transcend the boundaries of any specific religion, fostering a deep sense of peace.
Fort Dansborg, commonly known as the Danish Fort, is a 400-year-old Scandinavian structure located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Tranquebar (Tharangambadi). Built in 1620 by Danish Admiral Ove Gjedde under an agreement with King Ragunatha Nayak, it is the second-largest Danish fort in the world. The fort served as a hub for the Danish East India Company, specializing in the export of cotton textiles. Today, it stands as a preserved monument housing a museum filled with Danish artifacts, manuscripts, and 17th-century weaponry. The town of Tharangambadi itself feels like a European village, with its "Land Gate" and cobblestone streets. The sound of the waves (which gave the town its name) adds a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere to this historic site.
The Karpaka Vinayakar Temple at Pillayarpatti is a magnificent rock-cut cave temple dating back over 1,600 years. It is one of the most significant sites for Lord Ganesha worshippers in the world. The presiding deity, Karpaka Vinayakar, is a 6-foot-tall bas-relief carved out of a massive natural hillock. Unlike other Ganesha idols, the trunk here is curved to the right (Valampuri), signifying auspiciousness and wealth. The temple was built during the early Pandyan era and has been meticulously maintained by the Nagarathar (Chettiar) community for centuries. The cave also houses a Shiva Lingam known as Tiruveesar. Devotees believe that praying to this "Karpaga" (wish-fulfilling) tree-like God brings success in new ventures and education.
The Velankanni Church is a world-renowned Roman Catholic shrine. It is famously known as the Lourdes of the East due to the three significant miracles attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the 16th and 17th centuries. The shrine serves as a beacon of hope for millions of pilgrims of all faiths who come to seek healing. The vast complex includes several chapels, a museum, and a holy tank where one of the miracles occurred. The spiritual aura combined with the coastal breeze makes it a unique destination.
Thirukannapuram Sowriraja Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and a pinnacle of Vaishnavite worship. The deity is worshipped as Neelamegha Perumal, but he is famously known as Sowriraja Perumal due to a legend where Lord Vishnu grew a "Sowri" (wig of hair) to save a priest from the King's wrath. This temple is considered the foremost of the five Panchakanna Kshetrams. The temple complex is massive and is believed to have been originally seven layers deep. It is unique because it is one of the "Ashta Swayambhu Kshetras," where the Lord is said to have manifested himself in all eight forms of salvation. The spiritual aura here is intense, and it is a must-visit for those following the "Nalayira Divya Prabandham."
Ziegenbalg House was the residence of Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg, the first Protestant missionary to India who arrived in 1706. The house is now a well-maintained museum that chronicles the history of the Danish-Halle Mission. It is a site of immense cultural importance as it houses the first Tamil Printing Press. Visitors can see ancient manuscripts, the first translated Tamil Bible, and colonial-era furniture. The atmosphere is quiet and scholarly, reflecting the dedication of the missionaries who bridged European and Tamil cultures.
