Lichchavi Site

Vaishali, Bihar, India
The Lichchavi Site, often identified with the Raja Vishal ka Garh, is historically significant as the administrative center of the world’s first democratic republic. The Lichchavis ruled this region during the 6th century BCE and established a system of governance that influenced many future demo cracies. The site consists of a massive earthen mound which is believed to be the remains of the ancient parliament house where the 7,707 representatives of the republic met. Excavations have revealed various layers of history, from the Mauryan to the Gupta periods. This area is also deeply connected to Lord Buddha, who visited Vaishali frequently and delivered his last sermon nearby. Walking through these ruins feels like stepping back into the "Golden Age" of ancient India. The site represents the political maturity of ancient Indian society. It is currently managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
