Athirappilly Waterfalls
The Athirappilly Waterfalls are Kerala's largest waterfall, renowned for their incredible width and the sheer volume of water cascading down during the peak season. The water originates high up in the Sholayar forests and gathers momentum as the Chalakudy River before making its dramatic descent. Visitors can experience the falls from two main viewpoints: the top and the bottom. The upper view offers a breathtaking panoramic sight of the river spreading out before its plunge, while the view from the base, reached via a steep, approximately 15-20 minute trek through the dense tropical forest, provides an overwhelming sense of the falls' power. The misty spray rising from the bottom envelops the viewing area, creating a perpetually cool and refreshing atmosphere. This natural spectacle is more than just a waterfall; it is an important ecological zone. The surrounding forests are part of the protected Vazhachal Forest Division, serving as a critical habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including rare and endemic species. The falls have featured prominently in many famous Indian movies, further cementing their status as a major tourist and cinematic landmark. The journey to the falls itself is scenic, winding through thick vegetation and small tea and spice plantations. It is important to note that access to the water is highly restricted and guarded due to the strong currents and slippery rocks, prioritizing safety above all else. The beauty changes dramatically with the seasons, from a roaring giant during the monsoon to a more serene, braided flow during the summer months of February and March.:

Charpa Falls
**Charpa Falls** is a charming, yet powerful, seasonal waterfall located right beside the main **Athirappilly-Vazhachal** road. It is often considered the smaller sibling of the two larger waterfalls but possesses a distinct, raw beauty. Unlike the others, **Charpa Falls** directly plunges from a low height, approximately **40 feet** (12 meters), onto a cluster of rocks very close to the asphalt road. The falls are at their most spectacular during the **monsoon** season (**June to September**) when the **Chalakudy River** is in full spate. During this time, the water flow is so abundant and forceful that the cascade nearly spills onto the road, creating a thrilling and refreshing spectacle for passing motorists. This roadside location means that visitors can easily pull over and enjoy the view without any extensive trekking or long walks. In the dry season, particularly from **February** to **May**, the waterfall significantly reduces to a trickle or may even dry up completely, making it a truly seasonal phenomenon. The sight of the water rushing down and joining the main river course is a beautiful reminder of the raw power of nature. It serves as an excellent spot for a quick photo stop while traveling between **Athirappilly** and **Vazhachal**. The dense forest cover is visible just behind the falls, emphasizing the area's wild, untouched nature.

Thumboormuzhi Dam & Butterfly Garden
The Thumboormuzhi Dam & Butterfly Garden is a beautifully developed eco-tourism site located downstream from Athirappilly and Vazhachal. This site is centered around a check dam built across the Chalakudy River for irrigation purposes. The main attraction is the Butterfly Garden, which is a dedicated habitat and viewing area for numerous butterfly species. This meticulously maintained garden hosts specific nectar and host plants, attracting over 140 species, including the colorful Southern Birdwing and the majestic Common Rose. The garden offers a vibrant, educational, and tranquil experience, especially during the peak butterfly seasons. Another major highlight is the Thumboormuzhi Hanging Bridge (suspension bridge), which spans the Chalakudy River and connects the Thrissur district side (where the garden is located) to the Ernakulam district side, known as Ezhattumukham Prakriti Gramam (Nature Village). Walking across this bridge provides a stunning panoramic view of the river, the dam, and the surrounding lush greenery. The site also features a clean, well-equipped children's park and a general garden area, making it a perfect, safe, and family-friendly spot. Unlike the falls, which focus on raw natural power, Thumboormuzhi emphasizes a controlled, peaceful, and interactive natural environment. It is an ideal stop for those traveling back from the waterfalls towards Kochi or Chalakudy, offering a change of pace and scenery.:

Vazhachal Falls
Located just 5 KMS upstream from the powerful Athirappilly Waterfalls, Vazhachal Falls offers a completely different, yet equally captivating, natural spectacle. Unlike the dramatic vertical plunge of its sister falls, Vazhachal is characterized by a sprawling, inclined rapid that rushes over smooth, flat rock formations. The water spreads out widely, creating a chain of small cascades and rapids that flow with high speed. This fall is essentially a rapid-style flow rather than a sheer drop. The area around Vazhachal is maintained as a well-manicured riverside park and eco-tourism center by the Forest Department. This makes it an ideal spot for family picnics and relaxing walks along the bank. The atmosphere is generally quieter than at Athirappilly, making it perfect for those seeking peace and a closer connection to the river itself, though again, stepping into the water flow is highly dangerous and prohibited. The dense forest surrounding Vazhachal is an integral part of the Vazhachal Forest Division, which is why the area is so well-protected. The combined ticket system with Athirappilly encourages tourists to visit both, appreciating the contrast between the two different forms of the Chalakudy River's descent. The surrounding greenery is incredibly thick, and the area is particularly famous among bird watchers for the sighting of the Great Indian Hornbill, which often nests in this undisturbed forest stretch. The ease of access, combined with the gentle beauty of the sloping rapids and the surrounding tall trees, makes Vazhachal a must-visit companion to Athirappilly.:

Vazhachal Waterfalls
**Vazhachal Waterfalls** offers a refreshing contrast to the powerful, vertical plunge of **Athirappilly**. Located just **5 KMS** further down the same **Chalakudy River** within the protected forest area, **Vazhachal** is characterized by its **horizontal cascade**. The river here descends in multiple, wide, step-like layers over smooth rocks, creating a sheet of rapidly flowing, foamy water rather than a dramatic drop. The effect is one of serene, broad majesty, distinct from the thunderous roar of its famous neighbor. The surroundings of **Vazhachal** are impeccably maintained, featuring beautiful, manicured gardens and extensive, shaded walking paths. This makes it an excellent spot for families, elderly visitors, and those who prefer a more relaxed and less physically demanding experience. Like **Athirappilly**, **Vazhachal** is an integral part of the **Vazhachal Forest Division**, a crucial conservation area. This area is particularly important for its dense, riverside forest known as **'Riparian Forest'**, which is home to an astonishing array of flora and fauna. It is one of the very few places in the **Western Ghats** where all four of the South Indian **Hornbill** species are known to nest, making it an exceptionally important site for birdwatching and ecological studies. Visitors can walk right up to the shallow, flowing water (in designated safe areas) and enjoy the cool, fresh air, often seeing the river stretch deep into the dense, untouched forest.
