Lakshman Jhula

Lakshman Jhula is an iconic suspension bridge that spans the Ganges River, connecting the villages of Tapovan (Tehri Garhwal district) and Jonk (Pauri Garhwal district). The original bridge, a jute rope structure, is believed to have been built by Lord Rama's brother, Lakshman, to cross the river. The current iron suspension bridge was constructed in 1929 after a flood destroyed the original. It stretches approximately 137 meters (450 feet) and stands about 21 meters (70 feet) above the river. Note: Due to safety concerns regarding its age and increasing foot traffic, the old Lakshman Jhula was permanently closed to pedestrian and two-wheeler traffic in 2019. The surrounding area, however, remains a major tourist hub, famous for its vibrant market, temples (Lakshman Temple, Tera Manzil Temple), and bustling riverside cafes. It remains an essential cultural landmark and is now primarily viewed from a distance or by walking nearby lanes. The nearby Janki Setu and Ram Jhula now serve the primary crossing needs.
