Patan Devi Mandir
The Patan Devi Mandir, particularly the Badi Patan Devi (Great Patan Devi), is one of the oldest and most sacred Hindu temples in Patna. It is revered as one of the 51 Siddha Shakti Peethas in India, a site where a part of the goddess Sati's body is believed to have fallen. According to Puranic lege nds, the 'right thigh' of Sati's corpse fell here when Lord Vishnu dismembered it with his Sudarshan Chakra. The temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Durga, is considered the presiding deity of the city, and the name of Patna is widely believed to have been derived from the goddess's name, Patneshwari. The current structure houses the sacred images of the three goddesses—Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati—all carved in black stone and facing North towards the Ganga River. The temple is a major spiritual center, especially during Navratri and Durga Puja, when it witnesses massive crowds of devotees. The area also houses the Chhoti Patan Devi Mandir nearby, which also has significant historical and religious value.
