Ruins of Vikramshila

Patna, Bihar, India
The Ruins of Vikramshila represent one of the two most important centers of Buddhist learning in ancient India, alongside Nalanda. Established by King Dharmapala of the Pala Dynasty in the late 8th Century, it was a premier university that attracted scholars from all over Asia, especially Tibet. Th e university was famous for its department of Vajrayana Buddhism and Tantric studies. At its peak, it housed over a hundred teachers and thousands of students. The site was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193, leading to a decline in Buddhist influence in the region. Today, the massive excavated site reveals a giant central stupa surrounded by a square monastery with residential cells for monks. The walls are adorned with exquisite terracotta plaques depicting deities, animals, and social scenes of the Pala era. The serene environment on the banks of the Ganges makes it a deeply spiritual and educational destination for those seeking to understand India's intellectual heritage. :
