Jama Masjid

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, @@India
The Jama Masjid in Fatehpur Sikri is one of the largest mosques in India and a sacred complex that formed the spiritual and religious heart of Emperor Akbar's capital city. Built between 1571-72 CE, it was among the first structures to be completed in the new city and was designed as the principal c ongregational mosque (Friday Mosque). It is an architectural masterpiece that embodies a fusion of Mughal, Persian, and local Gujarati styles, a hallmark of Akbar's inclusive architectural vision. The mosque complex is entered through several grand gateways, the most imposing of which is the massive Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence), which was added later to commemorate Akbar's victory over Gujarat. The mosque is built around a vast central courtyard (sahn) surrounded by cloisters (dalans). The western wall houses the main prayer hall (sanctuary), which is dominated by a central alcove and crowned by three large domes. Inside the courtyard lies the exquisite marble Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, the Sufi saint whose blessings Akbar sought and received for the birth of his heir, Prince Salim (Jahangir). The mosque is still in use for prayer today, lending an air of living history and religious continuity to the monumental space, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sheer scale and intricate ornamentation, particularly the use of red sandstone contrasting with white marble inlay, make it a breathtaking sight.

Exploring the Dalans and Cells:Walk through the long, two-bay cloisters (dalans) that line the courtyard's three sides. These small cells were likely used by pilgrims, students, and practitioners, and offer a sense of the mosque's function as an educational and social center.

Observing Religious Life:Since the mosque is active, respectfully observe the daily prayers and the life of the devotees. This provides a glimpse into the living history of the site. Remember to be respectful and dress appropriately (covering head and legs).

Examining the Marble Jali Work:Spend time admiring the incredibly intricate, filigree-like carving of the marble screens on the Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, which are one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic craftsmanship. Try to capture the details of the serpentine brackets and floral patterns in close-up photography.

Finding the Baoli:Look for the remains of the octagonal step-well (baoli) located adjacent to the mosque's enclosure wall, a crucial water source for the large congregation.

Fusion of Styles and Scale:The mosque is rectangular, measuring approximately 165 meters by 130 meters. It is built primarily of red sandstone with extensive use of white marble inlay for decorative purposes, creating a striking contrast. It represents a stylistic culmination of Mughal and indigenous Gujarat traditions.

The Sanctuary and Domes:The main prayer hall on the western side is characterized by a colossal central archway (iwan) flanked by wings of pillared arcades.

It is covered by three impressive domes: a large central dome and two smaller ones over the side aisles. The hall features three entrances and a principal mihrab (prayer niche) on the western wall, which is adorned with inlaid stones and glazed tiles.

The Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti:Located within the courtyard, this tomb is a notable deviation from the mosque's red sandstone palette, being entirely encased in white marble with finely carved marble screens (jali) that reflect the late Gujarat style. It is a stunning example of intricate architectural filigree.

The Buland Darwaza:Though structurally separate, it is the main visual feature of the complex. It is a colossal gateway rising about 54 meters from the outside ground level, marking a triumphal entrance. It is semi-octagonal in plan with a central recessed arch and crowned by a row of thirteen smaller chhatris (domed pavilions).
