Tansen's Barahdari

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India
History and Purpose: This single-storey, rectangular structure, whose name literally means 'Twelve Door Pavilion' (Barahdari), is traditionally associated with Miyan Tansen, the legendary musician and one of the nine gems (Navratnas) of Emperor Akbar's court. Although historical evidence is scant, l egend suggests this is where he practiced his mesmerizing ragas and perhaps performed for the emperor. Its location, often cited as near the main religious/town complex, suggests a link to public or semi-public court functions. Architecturally, a Barahdari is a pavilion designed to allow maximum airflow. It is believed that the structure's acoustics were perfect for musical practice and performance. It stands today as a tribute to the celebrated cultural heritage of the Mughal court under Akbar. The Legend of Ragas: The structure is famous for the local legend that Tansen could ignite lamps with his Deepak Raga and bring rain with the Megh Malhar Raga within these walls.

Design and Dimension: A classic Barahdari structure, it is a rectangular, single-storey pavilion built of red sandstone with a simple, functional aesthetic. It is characterized by having twelve open doorways, three on each of its four sides, designed for excellent cross-ventilation and acoustics.

Interior and Exterior: The central oblong hall features a simple wagon-vaulted ceiling, and the exterior is adorned with elegant marble and buff sandstone inlay work, mostly in intricate geometric designs like hexagons and star patterns. The roof of the surrounding verandah is supported by pillars and architraves, often made of sloping stone slabs (khaprel) to resemble tiles. Its small size and lack of amenities like baths and toilets suggest it was a performance or practice space, not a residence.
