How To Reach Hawa Mahal

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, @@India
A much smaller structure than its famous namesake in Jaipur, this Hawa Mahal in Fatehpur Sikri is a double-storey pavilion that was an integral part of the Imperial Harem or Zenana, the private quarters for the royal women. It is sometimes also referred to as a small gateway or screen rather than a palace in the grand sense. Built primarily of red sandstone, its function was to provide a secluded, cool space where the ladies could relax and observe the outside world without being seen, strictly adhering to the purdah system, which was a social custom of the era. The structure is characterized by beautiful jali screens (latticework) that allow the breeze (hawa) to pass through, giving it the cooling effect and the name Palace of Winds. The pavilion acted as a transition space, offering views of the adjoining quarters and, in some historical accounts, connecting to a viaduct passage for their movement, highlighting the thoughtful design for the comfort and privacy of Akbar's consorts, particularly in the sweltering North Indian summers. This small palace is a testament to the practical yet elegant solutions incorporated into Mughal domestic architecture. The structure is an extension of the northern suite of Jodha Bai's Palace. The ground floor is an open pillared area, while the upper floor is enclosed by the renowned stone screens, which are the main feature that earned it its name. The elegance of the carved screens juxtaposed against the simplicity of the red sandstone walls provides a subtle but charming architectural detail within the massive fortress complex. It is a quiet corner that speaks volumes about the life of the royal women.

How to Reach

By Air:The nearest domestic airport is Agra's Kheria Airport (AGR), which is approximately 33-40 KMS away. From there, one can hire a pre-paid taxi or a private cab. For international travellers, Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi is the nearest major hub, around 215 KMS away, followed by a taxi, train, or bus journey to Fatehpur Sikri or Agra.

By Train:The nearest station is Fatehpur Sikri Railway Station (FTS), which is only about 1 KM from the main complex. However, it is a small station. The major rail hub is Agra Cantt (AGC), about 37 KMS away, with excellent connectivity from all major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. From Agra Cantt, one can take a local train to FTS or hire a taxi/bus.

By Road:Fatehpur Sikri is located approximately 36-40 KMS from Agra and is easily reachable via NH 19 and NH 44 (old NH 2). State-run buses and private air-conditioned tourist buses run regularly from Agra's Idgah Bus Stand. Taxis and pre-booked cabs offer the most comfortable option.

By Local Transport:The area near the complex is a restricted vehicular zone. From the main parking lot/bus stand, you must hire a CNG auto-rickshaw (a quick, cheap ride), or walk the short distance uphill to the main gate. This local transport is mandatory for the last segment of the journey to protect the monument from pollution.
