How To Reach Pachisi Court

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Imperial Game Board and its Legend: The Pachisi Court, also known as the Chaupar Court, is one of the most intriguing and unique features of the Fatehpur Sikri palace complex. It is a massive courtyard paved with large, distinctive red sandstone slabs laid out in the form of a symmetrical cross, which exactly resembles the board used for the traditional Indian board game, Pachisi (a precursor to modern Ludo/Parcheesi). Legend, popularized by local guides, claims that Emperor Akbar played this game on a grand scale here, using real human beings, often slave girls dressed in different colored costumes, as the pawns or pieces. This human chessboard narrative has captured the imagination of countless visitors, though concrete historical documentation for this specific practice in this location is limited. Nevertheless, it is known that Akbar was an avid player of the game, and the monumental scale of the court certainly lends credence to the idea of an imperial, large-scale version of the game. It served as a large, open plaza framed by important buildings like the Panch Mahal and the Diwan-i-Aam. It formed a ceremonial and recreational heart of the private palace quarters, connecting the public administrative areas with the royal residential section.
