Photos Of Jodha Bai's Palace

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, @@India
Jodha Bai's Palace, also correctly known as the palace of Mariam-uz-Zamani, was the largest and most important residential palace in the royal harem (Zenana) of Fatehpur Sikri. It was built by Emperor Akbar for his chief Rajput wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani, the mother of Prince Salim (Jahangir). The palac e is a magnificent example of the successful fusion of Mughal and Hindu-Rajasthani architectural styles, reflecting Akbar's policy of religious and cultural assimilation. It is built as a self-contained, high-walled structure, emphasizing the privacy and security required for the royal women. The palace is a large, rectangular complex built around a central courtyard, a common feature in traditional Hindu residential architecture. Unlike most other structures in Fatehpur Sikri, it features pronounced Gujarati and Rajasthani motifs, such as carved swans, temple bells, and the structural use of curvilinear pillars and ornate brackets. This deliberate incorporation of Hindu elements, including a small temple and a Tulsi Math (sacred basil plant platform) within the complex, attests to the occupant's Hindu faith and the respect she was afforded by the Mughal emperor. Built entirely of red sandstone, the palace is robust and practical, designed for comfortable and secure living. It stands as a powerful symbol of the mutual tolerance and cultural exchange that characterized Akbar's reign.
